California Native Plants

Carpenteria californicaNative plants are an essential element in the beautiful natural landscapes for which California is famous. California's native plants have evolved to live with the local climate, soil types, and animals. This means they save water, require little maintenance, are naturally pest-free and have the added bonus of attracting native butterflies and birds. California native plants grow in an astounding array of forms, colors and sizes that are perfectly suited to our local ecosystems.

Carpenteria californica
Carpenteria californicaThis lovely member of the Mock Orange family produces a show of large white flowers from late spring through summer. The rest of the year, it is an evergreen, upright, informal hedge with dark glossy leaves. Growing 3 to 10 feet tall, Carpenteria is easily shaped with pruning and prefers light shade plus occasional deep watering during the summer.
Fremontodendron californicum
Fremontodendron californicum With its eye-catching mass of lemon yellow flowers from May to June and evergreen leaves, this Fremontia makes an excellent back-of-garden showpiece. This showy shrub enjoys sun and tends to hate summer water once established so excellent drainage is a must. Quickly grows to 6-20 feet tall.
Arctostaphylos 'Emerald Carpet'
Arctostaphylos 'Emerald Carpet' One of the greenest, most uniform Manzanitas, A. 'Emerald Carpet' sprawls to form a tall bright green ground cover 9 to 14 inches tall. Produces small pink flowers March through April. Once established, this Manzanita will thrive in well-drained soil on once-a-month watering.
Heteromeles arbutifolia
Heteromeles arbutifolia Better known as Toyon, this festive shrub was the namesake for Hollywood. Its stiff evergreen foliage and dense clusters of bright red berries make it a favorite for holiday wreaths. It does best in full sun to light shade, with little to no summer water once established. Dense shrub will grow 6-10 feet tall or prune to form a small multi-trunked tree 15-25 feet tall.
Heuchera maxima
Heuchera maxima Hundreds of tiny white bell-shaped flowers sway 2 feet above broad evergreen mounds of heart-shaped green foliage. Blooms February though April. More luxuriant with some summer water.
Penstemon heterophyllus
Penstemon heterophyllus This showy perennial produces hundreds of blue to purple flowers on 1 foot spikes. Blooms as early as March and will continue into the fall if the plant is pruned occasionally. Plant in masses for a stunning display.
Eriogonum grande rubescens
Eriogonum grande rubescens Unlike other Buckwheats, the Red Buckwheat is evergreen, forming a nice, dense 1–2 foot wide mound perfect in a mass planting, particularly along border edges. Producing clusters of rosy red flowers throughout summer, this hardy perennial grows 10 to 12 inches high and slightly wider.
Cupressus macrocarpa
Cupressus macrocarpa Widely planted as an ornamental, Monterey Cypress grows best in areas with mild climates, winter rain and cool ocean breezes. Salt tolerant, this tree is an excellent choice for seaside plantings where it becomes wind swept and develops a handsome irregular shape. Growing up to 40 feet tall on the coast, or it develops into a tall, straight tree up to 100 feet tall when grown away from the seaside. Susceptible to disease in hot, dry regions.
Lyonothamnus floribunda aspleniifolius
Lyonothamnus floribunda aspleniifolius Redwood-colored peeling bark and dark green fern like leaves make the Catalina Ironwood a distinctive small tree. Large clusters of tiny white flowers provide extra interest throughout summer. Best near the coast in well drained soil.
Carex tumulicola
Carex tumulicola This graceful, arching grass is great for creating a lush, meadow-like effect in full sun or light shade with occasional water. This sedge retains its great looks all year round and matures at about 3 feet wide and 2 feet tall. A dense root system makes it a great choice for soil stabilization.
Woodwardia fimbriata
Woodwardia fimbriata This large upright spreading fern grows to 6 feet tall but can reach a height of 9 feet in wet coastal areas. Grow this shade lover among trees for a natural woodland effect or use near a pool, pond, against a shaded wall, or even in a container. Will tolerate full sun if extra moisture is given.
