Edible Ornamentals – The Gourmet Garden

Rosa 'Flower Carpet' Amber
Passiflora edulis– Purple Passion Fruit
Rosa 'Flower Carpet' Amber
Vaccinium corymbosum–Blueberry

What could be more practical and stylish than a lush landscape that produces loads of luscious fresh food ripe for the picking? Whether it's a bounty of colorful fruit on gracefully branching trees, vine-covered trellises hanging with scrumptious tropical fruit, paths lined with fragrant herbs, or containers filled with citrus, edible ornamentals are easy-to-grow, gorgeous, and rewarding for your health.

Agave ‘Blue Flame’
Feijoa sellowiana – Pineapple Guava – This versatile and attractive evergreen shrub produces a display of sweet, edible flowers from May to June that can be used in fruit salads or jams then ripen to delicious pineapple-flavored fruit in the fall. Feijoas respond well to pruning and can easily be shaped to any desired form. They make an excellent hedge or container plant. Feijoa is remarkably pest-and disease-resistant.
Cordyline ‘Festival Grass’
Orange 'Washington Navel' – For delicious, juicy, easy-peeling, seedless oranges, the Washington Navel can't be beat. This tree exudes sunshine in the middle of winter with its glossy green leaves and loads of cheerful colorful oranges that remind everyone of warmer summer days. Fragrant flowers in spring.
Helleborus argutifolius
Artichoke – This unusual perennial adds architectural interest to the landscape with long, arching lobed leaves and a silver-green color. This thistle can reach 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. The edible buds should be harvested while they are tight and firm and about 3 inches in diameter. Unharvested buds will open into large purple flowers.
Parthenocissus tricuspidata ‘Veitchii’
Pomegranate 'Wonderful' – This pomegranate is prized for its extra large juicy fruit that has an exquisite wine-like flavor and can be used in juices, jellies, or eaten fresh. This lovely tree will grow up to 20 feet tall but can be pruned to a much smaller size or left as a sprawling shrub. The flowers of the Wonderful pomegranate are the brightest red and the gorgeous red fruit ripens in September and will last on the tree for weeks.
Agonis flexuosa ‘Jervis Bay After Dark
Fig 'Black Mission' – The resilient and highly adaptable fig tree can be grown outdoors, in a container, as an espalier against a wall, or pruned to almost any size or shape. The large distinctive leaves and stemfuls of large, pear shaped, purplish-black fruit will delight every lover of sweet tasty figs. The fruit ripens late summer to fall and is delicious in desserts and appetizers.
Mandevilla ‘Sun Parasol Crimson’
Malus 'Prairifire' – Crabapple – 'Prairifire' is an outstanding flowering tree with bright red flowers and decorative red-purple fruit that adds old-fashioned charm and romance to any garden. New foliage is beautiful reddish-maroon that matures to dark green. When leaves drop in the fall, 'Prairifire' has the added bonus of reddish colored bark that adds interest throughout the winter.
Podocarpus elongatus ‘Icee Blue®’ (‘Monmal’) –
Vaccinium corymbosum – Blueberry – The highbush blueberry is one of the most ornamentally beautiful shrubs that provide four seasons of fanfare, starting with twisted, peeling stems in winter; profuse white or pink blossoms in spring; savory blue fruit in summer; and long-lasting foliage the color of a rich red wine in fall. Semi, self-fertile varieties are 'Jubilee', 'Misty', 'O'Neal', 'Sharpblue', 'Southmoon' and 'Sunshine Blue'.
Rosa ‘Flower Carpet® Amber'
Persimmon 'Fuyu' – These trees are highly desirable for their hardiness and crisp, sweet fruit. Persimmon trees are extremely decorative in fall when the foliage turns a vivid yellow, orange, or red, followed by the deep-orange fruit that often clings to the bare branches of the tree long after the leaves have fallen. The Fuyu ripens in November and is as sweet and crisp as an apple and can be used in baking.
Rosa ‘Flower Carpet® Amber'
Salvia officinalis – Garden Sage – An aromatic evergreen sub-shrub with downy foliage that varies in color from gray to gray-green. The camphor scented, purple-blue flowers, which appear in mid-summer are exceptionally attractive. Pruning encourages young shoots with a strong flavor that enhances sauces, stuffing, and salads.
Rosa ‘Flower Carpet® Amber'
Passiflora edulis – Purple Passion Fruit – This vigorous climbing vine has shiny green leaves and fragrant tropical flowers. The showy flowers produce round fruit with a smooth tough rind that protects the wonderfully tart orange pulp inside. The aromatic pulp can be scooped out and used in drinks, desserts, and sauces.
