Small Trees

Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’ Cornus ‘Florida’ Rosa ‘Assorted Varieties’ 48” Patio Tree
Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’ Cornus ‘Florida’ Rosa 48” Patio Tree

Small trees provide colorful flowers and foliage when space is limited in urban and suburban environments. Small trees are well-behaved and won’t take over when space is tight. Plant one singly as a patio tree or a stunning specimen in a small lawn. Planted in containers they grace an entrance or walkway, or group in a colony for an attractive grove effect. Evergreen varieties make excellent privacy screens.

Brugmansia ‘Charles Grimaldi’ – Masses of pale orange trumpets drip from imposing shrubs or small trees. Angel’s Trumpet Gold looks fantastic in containers or plunged into a border, and the dramatic foot-long blossoms are deliciously fragrant from late spring until autumn. Grows fast to 10 feet tall, filling out quickly with warm weather. All parts are highly toxic if ingested.
Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’ – A true harbinger of spring, ‘Forest Pansy’ produces long-lasting clusters of tiny, rose-purple flowers that bloom profusely in early spring before the foliage emerges. This cultivar of the popular Eastern Redbud can eventually grow to 15-25 feet tall. Heart-shaped leaves open bright reddish-purple and gradually mature to a more muted purple. Its graceful branching structure stands out in winter.
Podocarpus elongatus ‘Icee Blue’ – Unusual for its dense bluish foliage, this beautiful evergreen tree keeps its stunning color year-round. This decorative conifer has a natural pyramidal shape and looks great as a screen or hedge. It also does well in containers or as a patio tree. Slow growing to 15-25 feet tall.
Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’ – This compact, upright tree has half-size leaves and large flowers that make it unique among Magnolia cultivars. Little Gem produces flowers often and at a comparatively young age, at only 1 to 2 years old. Grows to 20 feet and blooms constantly throughout summer and into fall.
Cassia splendida ‘Golden’
Cassia splendida ‘Golden’ – Catch gold fever with a dazzling show of vibrant 3 inch golden blooms throughout autumn and winter. Golden Wonder Senna is a vigorous evergreen tree perfect for mild climates. This easy-care plant is well suited to limited space. Prune it to the size of a shrub or permit it to grow to tree height, up to 18 feet tall and about as wide.
Ficus benjamina
Ficus benjamina – The most popular indoor tree, Weeping Fig grows to 30 feet tall outdoors. Its graceful drooping branches are blanketed in glossy green leaves. It is often seen in entryways and patios due to its elegant growth and tolerance of poor growing conditions.
Rosa 48” Patio Tree
Rosa ‘Assorted Varieties’ 48” Patio Tree – The most popular shrub in the West, the rose comes in a huge variety of colors and fragrances. Grown as a small tree, the rose adds grace and a lovely scent to any area where people gather. Quite elegant when planted along walkways or drives.
Cornus ‘Florida’
Cornus ‘Florida’ – Flowering Dogwood is one of America’s most popular ornamental trees. This tree is loved for its loads of beautiful white blooms that cover the tree in spring, its graceful shape, and its glowing red fall foliage. Slow growing to 20 feet tall, resilient, and beautiful as an accent plant.
Geijera parviflora
Geijera parviflora – Australian Willow has a graceful shape reminiscent of the weeping willow, but with the toughness of a Eucalyptus and non-invasive roots. This attractive evergreen needs only light pruning and is relatively pest free. Moderate growth to 20-30 feet tall and 20 feet wide.
Agonis flexuosa ‘Jervis Bay After Dark’
Agonis flexuosa ‘Jervis Bay After Dark’ – One of the best small trees for warm climates. Named for its signature smell, the Peppermint Tree has deep burgundy foliage on weeping branches. White flowers with burgundy centers appear in clusters from spring into early summer. Fast growing to 25-35 feet tall.
Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’
Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’ – Vigorous and upright to as tall as 30 feet, the twigs and branches of the Coral Bark Maple have a striking coral color prized for its winter interest. A nice tree for all seasons, the green leaves of spring and summer turn golden-yellow in autumn.
